PRP Therapy for Hair Loss
Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy for Hair Restoration
95% of hair loss in both sexes is caused by Androgenetic Alopecia (hereditary hormone dependent hair loss). The evidence is clear. The efficacy of platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy for hereditary hair loss is proven to increase hair density, and thickness; and reduce hair loss with no significant side effects. It is a safe and effective hair restoration treatment that can improve your quality of life.
PRP therapy is a revolutionary procedure that has been used in oral surgery, neurosurgery, sports medicine and orthopedics for the past two decades with success. PRP therapy uses your own biological healing powers to regrow hair.
PRP therapy is safe because it is made from your own blood and injected into you so there is no risk of adverse reaction or disease transmission. PRP therapy is an ideal minimally invasive treatment to catalyze hair regrowth.
How Does PRP Work?
Our blood contains platelets, stem cells and specific growth factors that are designed to heal injuries. Platelets are a natural reservoir of hundreds of biologically active growth factors that are essential to healing and tissue repair. By extracting, concentrating and injecting PRP into your scalp, we can facilitate and accelerate tissue regeneration and healing and improve blood supply to the scalp.
The primary purpose of PRP in hair restoration is to stimulate inactive hair follicles to enter the active growth phase. PRP’s growth factors and stem cells stimulate dormant hair follicles to grow hair. It may take up to 6 months to complete see results.
The PRP Procedure
A small amount of blood is taken from your arm. The blood is spun to separate and concentrate the platelets in the plasma from the rest of the blood components. The concentrated platelets and growth factors are combined with the remaining blood and are ready for injection.
The scalp is cleaned and numbed with local anesthetic. Dr. Farhang many inject the PRP into the scalp or use Microneedling to create thousands of microscopic puncture wounds in the scalp skin to induce the body’s natural healing abilities of growth and repair. When PRP is applied to the area, the micro punctures capture the PRP and allow it to penetrate deeply into the hair follicles. The proteins, stem cells and growth factors almost immediately go to work to stimulate hair follicles. PRP therapy may also be combined with minoxidil for added benefits.
The procedure requires no down time and has minimal side effects. You may experience some swelling in the treated areas that should resolve within the first 48 hours. Initially you may notice that you are losing less hair. Complete results may take up to 6 months.
PRP can improve thinning hair and male pattern baldness. It is the non-surgical solution to hair loss and thinning hair, for men and women. It works for traction alopecia from hair extensions, and ponytails. Studies now show that PRP works in Alopecia areata (AA), a common autoimmune condition, causing inflammation-induced hair loss.
Who is a Good Candidate?
Men in their early twenties commonly find their hair loss has started. PRP works on bald spots and receding hairlines. So long as you have hair growing, you would be a candidate. PRP will not work well when there are shiny bald spots and follicles are that are not open or visible.
Women who are experiencing or have experienced hair loss due to hormonal changes including thyroid disorders, medications, and aging, are also good candidates for PRP. Women who suffer with hereditary hair loss that shows as overall thinning are good candidates as well.
Male pattern baldness that results in a total loss of hair on the top and back of the head may be irreversible. Early diagnosis and treatment are the keys to saving your hair.
What About Repeat Treatments?
Studies report that a series of 3 – 4 treatments spaced a month apart show measurable results. Once you are satisfied that the treatment works and you are satisfied with your results, maintenance treatments will be recommended to sustain hair growth.
