So you have dry, cracked skin. Here’s why it happens & how to fix it
If your skin has been dry, flaky, tight, or cracking lately, you’re definitely not alone. Dry skin is one of the most common things I see in my practice, especially here in Arizona where our climate is constantly working against your skin barrier. The problem is that a lot of the advice online is either oversimplified or just plain wrong. Drinking more water, layering on facial oils, or buying the most expensive moisturizer isn’t necessarily going to fix the issue.
Most dry skin comes down to a compromised skin barrier. Once that barrier is damaged, your skin loses moisture faster than it can replace it, leaving you with irritation, rough patches, redness, and makeup that never seems to sit right. The goal isn’t just to add moisture, it’s to help your skin hold onto it.
I spend a lot of time talking to my patients about barrier repair because it’s the foundation of healthy skin. The right ingredients and a few simple changes to your routine can completely transform dry, irritated skin without needing an overly complicated regimen.
Below are some of the biggest misconceptions I hear about dry skin, what’s actually happening beneath the surface, and the dermatologist-approved products and habits I recommend to help repair your skin barrier and keep your skin healthy year-round.
If your skin’s been dry, flaky, or cracked lately, I promise it’s not because you’re not drinking enough water.
Here’s what’s actually going on (and why most of the advice you’ve heard is backwards):
Water doesn’t moisturize your skin. It helps your cells function better, but it does nothing for a compromised barrier.
Hyaluronic acid can make it worse. If your moisturizer is HA-heavy and you’re not sealing it in, it can actually pull moisture out of your skin in dry climates.
Oiling before your shower? Right idea, wrong order. Oil works best applied after you get out, while skin is still damp.
So what actually works:
- Add a humidifier to your room. Sounds small, makes a massive difference overnight
- Look for ceramides. They’re what rebuild your skin barrier from the inside out — not just sit on top like a typical lotion. This is the ingredient most people skip and shouldn’t
- Exfoliate instead of oiling. Glycolic acid, lactic acid, or a retinoid smooths and firms — oil just sits there
- A healthy barrier also means your makeup goes on smoother and actually lasts, dry skin is the number one reason foundation looks patchy by noon.
- Cetaphil, CeraVe, La Roche-Posay, Aveeno, Eucerin.
- All formulated with barrier-repairing ingredients, all affordable
